9/13/23 – This is a rare example of a Type 44 Arisaka that was modified to be a training rifle. Worn Type 44 Arisakas were removed from service and modified with Type 38 carbine parts. They had the folding bayonet removed and a new front sight and nose cap were used. The metal on the carbine is in good condition, but the Chrysanthemum is canceled out and ground. The top of the receiver is stamped “44 Type” and the side of the receiver has the serial number. The Serial number has the prefix “S” which is a known feature of these Type 44 trainers. The wood is in good condition, with no major damage but is heavily worn from cavalry use. The side sling swivel slot and bayonet recess is filled in. The bore is fairly dark with visible rifling, but is not very sharp.
