1/26/23 – This is an original WW2 production US Marine Raider Knife. Made by Collins, known as the Legitimus No. 18 V-44 Type Machete. This example is one of the first 1000 issued to the US Marine Raiders. Most of the Collins No. 18 machetes were procured as part of the declaration of war in 1941 by the AAF (Air Force), but many are also famously known for their use by the US Marine Corps. Research finds that most of these were ultimately used by the Army Air Force, making examples attributed to the USMC very desirable and highly collectible. This example comes with an original leather sheath, Marine Raider uniform patch, and a letter from the US Marine Raider Association. The letter states that the numbering applied to the knife is correct and of the first 1000 numbered No. 18 machetes used by the Marine Raiders. The letter also states the number on the knife is 535, however we think this is a typo as the knife is truly numbered 534. The letter references the crude, handmade nature of the numbering, which coincides with the style of numbering on this example. Further, the letter describes the initials “L.E.P.” which are scratched onto the backside of the scabbard and matches the description of this scabbard. Therefore we’re certain this is the example being described and referenced in the letter. The blade features a brass crossguard and an interesting clear plastic-like handle. The blade shows surface oxidation throughout and a few mild dings and dents along the edge from use. The scabbard and blade are both maker marked and Collins & Co Legitimus. Comes with a nice presentation case as well.
