11/21/24 – This is a great example of a WW2 Japanese Type 19 Army sword with Officers tassel. These swords were known in Japan as Kyu-Gunto and were used by the Army, Cavalry, and Naval officer’s from the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 till WW2. This example being the army variant of this sword, known as the Type 19. This sword is in great overall condition. The blade maintains its polished finish, and has only minor scabbard wear. There are no signs of sharpening on the blade. The handle and guard on this sword are made of brass and while there is some darkening patina throughout, these fittings have no major dents or damage to them. The handle on this sword is also in great condition and has no cracks or chips. The scabbard on this sword is in good condition but does have some patina and some dents and gauges, however none of which effect the use of the scabbard. This sword is what would be considered a “Parade” or “Dress” sword and would have been worn by the army officer on those occasions when they wanted to look their best.
