3/30/23 – This is a rare Model M1812 Flintlock Musket manufactured by Eli Whitney (inventor of the cotton gin) to be supplied to American soldiers in the war of 1812. This musket is notable for being the first mechanical device to successfully implement the use of interchangeable parts into the manufacturing process. Marked with the proper “P” proof on the barrel, and N.Haven on the faceplate, this one is one of only about 2000 made of this variation (from Flayderman’s Guide to Antique Firearms, pg. 280). It is also marked with the initials J N on the stock next to the left faceplate. The finish shows its age, with wear, pitting, and discoloration throughout the barrel, as well as pitting on the buttplate, trigger guard, and around the breech. The wood furniture is in very fine condition, without significant damage, but it does show some dings and scratches throughout, and there is a missing stock-securing pin on the left side, which does not impact stability or functionality. The bores on these weren’t rifled, and this one shows uniform corrosion throughout, indicating its age. Comes with leather sling and the original ram rod. Antique so no licensing required.
