8/26/24 – This is a handmade oil quenched Japanese Type 98 Army Officer’s Katana. The blade is excellent condition with a distinct, crisp hamon (tempered edge). Beautiful shine with a clean edge and tip. Extremely well preserved and a high grade showato. The hilt is signed by Amahide (Amahide with Kokuin) and stamped with a rare factory hot stamp. Mentioned in John Slough’s book “Modern Japanese Swordsmiths, 1868-1945: An Oshigata Book”. Cutting edge measures about 25 inches. Overall length 36.5 inches. The tsuba retains some of the original shiny and finish with a natural patina throughout. Engraved with 4 chrysanthemum flowers on each side. The washers are not matching but period correct. Typical army style fittings on the handle with some handling wear but great overall condition. Comes with an original military tassel and correct army scabbard. The scabbard has excellent finish but the catch does not properly lock. The fit is perfect nonetheless and “sticks” (stays) shut on its own.
