11/19/24 – This is an original Springfield M1884 Rifle with a rare prototype round rod bayonet. The serial number of this rifle puts year of production in 1891, and the left side of the stock has a military cartouche dated 1891. This one has a rare rod style bayonet. Military proofs around the breech with a Springfield marking on the locking plate. The butt plate has a “25”, likely some sort of unit or rack number. This particular example is in superb, above-average condition. It has retained most of its original bluing with nearly all of the original case-hardening visible on the breech. Just some minor discoloration here and there along the barrel, a few tiny marks and scratches here and there, some wear on the butt plate, and some spotty discoloration on the locking plate. Excellent, above-average wood furniture with a clear, crisp marking. The bore looks factory-new. Just a really nice example.
