10/20/22 – This is a nice example of a Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor rifle, chambered in .45-70. The serial number is 229500, which dates the receiver to about 1884. There is a faint military cartouche on the left side of the stock. It is very hard to see because the stock was sanded. There are US military inspection proofs on the breech and the barrel. Overall, the gun is in fair condition. It has lost virtually all of its original finish with spotty oxidation and brown patina covering all of the metal parts. No case hardening left on the breech. The wood stock is excellent with a couple of small gouges on the right side of the butt stock. Mint bore. Comes with original cleaning rod.
