7/18/23 – This is a nice example of a Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor rifle, chambered in .45-70. The serial number is 183649, which dates the receiver to about 1882. There are US military inspection proofs on the breech and the barrel, but no visible military cartouches on the stock. Overall, the gun is in fair condition. It has lost virtually all of its original finish with spotty oxidation and “attic patina” covering all of the metal parts. Some pitting on the butt plate. No major damage to the wood, but there is bruising and scratching throughout. The bore has strong rifling with some spots of light oxidation here and there.
