10/26/22 – This is a nice example of a Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor rifle, chambered in .45-70. The serial number is 223264, which dates the receiver to about 1883. The breech says “Model 1884”, so we assume it is a replacement. It is also blued. There is a faint military cartouche on the left side of the stock. It is very hard to see and is not legible. There are US military inspection proofs on the breech and the barrel. Overall, the gun is in nice condition. There is not much actual finish loss, but there is noticeable brown patina throughout and some areas of spotty oxidation around the breech and on the trigger guard. Heavy spotty oxidation and a few dings on the butt plate. Some wear around the muzzle and a few light scratches along the barrel. The wood stock has minor scratching and bruising throughout and a few more noticeable dings on the right side of the butt stock. Minty bore. Comes with original cleaning rod.
