1/28/22 – This is a nice example of a Springfield Model 1884 “Trapdoor” Rifle, manufactured in 1891. The model 1884 traces its roots back to the design of the Springfield 1873. The model 1884 incorporated a significant number of improvements that had been made between 1878 and 1879. It also featured a serrated trigger that had been incorporated into the Springfield rifle design in 1883. This one has a rare experimental rod bayonet where the cleaning rod also serves as a bayonet. This one is not one of the original 2,000 made because it is not in the correct serial range, ~320000. So it was part of the later run. This gun is in nice condition. There isn’t a ton of actual finish loss, but there is noticeable brown patina throughout. Heavy oxidation on the trigger group and butt plate. There are light scratches and areas of splotchy discoloration along the whole barrel. There is a small area near the muzzle with some noticeable dings in the barrel. The stock is nice with minor dings and dents here and there. One noticeable gouge on the right side of the butt stock. The bore is shiny with strong rifling with just one small area of minor pitting. The gun comes with a worn leather sling.
