10/7/22 – This is a nice example of a Springfield Model 1884 “Trapdoor” Rifle, manufactured in 1892. The model 1884 traces its roots back to the design of the Springfield 1873. The model 1884 incorporated a significant number of improvements that had been made between 1878 and 1879. It also featured a serrated trigger that had been incorporated into the Springfield rifle design in 1883. This one has a rare experimental rod bayonet where the cleaning rod also serves as a bayonet. This one is not one of the original 2,000 made because it is not in the correct serial range, ~320000. So it was part of the later run. There is also a “Cross” marking on the left side of the receiver. We’re not sure of its meaning. Overall, the gun is in nice condition. The barrel has retained most of its bluing, but there are areas of oxidation and pitting near the muzzle. Most of the case-hardening on the receiver has worn away, but it is still partially visible inside the breech. Heavy oxidation on the underside of the trigger guard. The stock has a crisp 1892-dated military cartouche on the left side. There is what looks like a rack number along the top of the butt stock. There is no major damage to the wood, but there are tiny dings and handling marks here and there. The bore is near-mint.
