7/6/23 – This is an original Springfield M1884 Rifle with a rare prototype round rod bayonet. The serial number of this rifle puts year of production in 1886, and the number falls within the known range of about 2000 rifles made around number 320000, being the original prototype production rifles with the rod style bayonet. (The receiver is numbered 319583.) The rifle stock cartouche is dated 1891, and has an added pistol grip cap on the underside of the wood, behind the trigger guard. The rifle also has an added front sight cover, which indicates this example was likely “upgraded” in 1891 with a new stock and added features. The rear sight features adjustable windage and elevation knobs, both of which are fully functional. The mechanics throughout this rifle are in great shape and fully functional. The bore is worn with shallow rifling and small areas of corrosion in the metal. Would likely still fire without issue, but overall bore rating is 5/10. The metal rates around 65% original condition with dark surface patina and browning discoloration mixed within the thinning blued finish. No active rust or notable pitting. The wood is in great condition with no cracks or chips and a strong cartouche stamp. The buttstock has a few original cleaning / takedown tools inside the inner compartment.
