10/19/22 – This is a nice example of a Springfield Model 1878 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured in 1886. The metal has retained most of its original finish but shows patina throughout. There are a few patches of heavier oxidation here and there. The receiver is marker “US MODEL 1878” and shows serial number “326871”, though it is unclear due to wear. The lock plate features the typical eagle insignia and “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” marking. The wooden stock is in nice condition, showing only minor handling wear throughout. Above the wrist on the left-hand side the stock features a military inspection stamp. The rifle includes an original cleaning rod. The bore is still fairly bright and has strong rifling, however there is minor frosting throughout.
