Cape Gun

SW121123 - 55638

12/11/23 – This is combination cape gun was manufactured by JP Sauer & Sohn in the early 1900’s. J.P. Sauer is a first rate German maker, and encountering a cape gun by this manufacturer is a rare find. This double barrel is chambered in 12 gauge shotgun on the left and 11mm Mauser on the right. Cape guns were popular among African colonists because the smoothbore allowed use of bird shot, buck shot, or slug/round ball loads. The rifle barrel was good for most soft skinned plains game. This piece retains about 95+% of its original finish with mild patina on the sides. Honest use wear shows around the engraving, but it is still very presentable. Features left and right loading indicators that are horizontal before opening/cocking. Once opened, the indicators rotate upward about 60 degrees. They return to the horizontal position when the trigger is pulled. The wood stock shows minimal wear with no cracks. The shotgun barrel has a clean, mirror bore while the rifle bore shows strong rifling with minor frosting within the grooves. Overall, it rates a strong 9 of 10. The firearm features Krupp fluid steel (Fluss Stahl) barrels, which are much more desirable than twist or Damascus steel. The meaning of all the proof marks is an elusive task, but all the marks are shown in the photos. There are no import marks and this is C&R eligible.
