10/2/23 – This is a scarce example of a U.S. marked Stevens Savage Model 77E riot shotgun, manufactured in the 1960’s. Beginning in 1963, the U.S. government purchased a total of 69,097 Model 77E riot shotguns from the Savage Arms Corporation for issue to the South Vietnamese Army; however, they were also widely used by U.S. Army and Marine units in Vietnam. Records indicate that 65,724 of the 69,097 Model 77E shotguns purchased under government contract were issued to the Republic of Vietnam or other allied forces. As a result, very few Model 77E shotguns returned from Vietnam, with estimates at only a few thousand. They have a shorter stock than other U.S. military shotguns as they were modified to accommodate South Vietnamese soldiers. Military models are parkerized with sling swivels and wooden stocks. The right side of the receiver is ‘U.S.’ marked, and ‘P’ proofs are present on barrel and receiver. This one also has an “SCHD” marking on the right side of the receiver, indicating it was issued to the South Carolina Highway Department after its military service. The metal parts on this one have retained about 90% of their finish. Minor wear around the muzzle and on the high edges in general. There are two small areas of wear on the right side of the barrel and magazine tube. Some very light surface scratches and small spots of discoloration here and there. Excellent stock. The rubber butt pad is dried and cracking. Mint bore.
