Miller Breechlock Conversion Model 1861

10/03/23 – This is a rare post-war conversion of the Model 1861 rifle that was common during the US Civil War. There was a bid out by the US Government to replace the aged muzzle-loading rifles with breechloading rifles. Instead of buying a whole new rifle, many designers opted to convert existing Model 1861 rifles that were already plentiful. While the Alin conversion was selected and became the Model 1865, the Meridian Manufacturing Company submitted its own design with a breech lock loading mechanism designed by William H. and George W. Miller. These rifles were chambered in .58 Rimfire and used the original .58 caliber barrel of the Model 1861. The rifle is in excellent shape on the stock and metal. The metal is free of any rusting or pitting and the barrel and bands are in the white. The stock is structurally sound doesn’t look like it was even handled much. There are some dings between the first and 2nd barrel bands on the left side of the stock and on the right side there is a white scratch. The bore is immaculate for its age and its mirror-bright with sharp rifling.
