7/6/23 – This is a rare Japanese Murata Type 22 rifle. These were first developed in 1889, during the 22nd year of the Meiji Emperor (hence the name type 22). This was Japan’s first smokeless powder rifle, and first repeating rifle with a tubular magazine under the chamber (8 round capacity). This example is in great condition, which we rate around 90% overall. There’s some finish loss and surface patina on the barrel band, front sight band, muzzle area, and finish loss on the underside of the floorplate and trigger guard. The wood is also in great condition, featuring a distinct and still legible cartouche on the right side of the buttstock. The interior circle indicates “Meiji 22”. There are typical surface dings and dents throughout the wood, and one small crack on the top part of the wrist, but this is mild (see photos). There’s an original cleaning rod within the buttstock as shown. The bolt has finish loss throughout and is mismatched to the number on the receiver. The other parts don’t appear to be numbered. The bore has strong rifling with some wear within the grooves, 7/10 overall. These were used in the Boxer Rebellion and saw limited military service until 1918. We’re not sure when this one was made, but based on the serial number this was most likely produced in the early 1900’s.
