10/17/24 – This is a good example of a Tropical M40 helmet with the rare “sand paint” made by Emaillerwerke A.G. / Fulda. This paint coating gives the helmet a almost sand paper like feel to the touch. It is unclear as to why they added the sand, whether it was to stretch the paint out or for form of camouflage. Tropical items are highly sought after due to the potential association with the North African campaign. This helmet maintains a very good amount of its original tropical sand paint. There is paint loss from age and wear throughout the helmet as well as a nice dent in the top of the helmet. The helmet does have it’s original leather interior and chin strap. The leather interior is intact, but does have leather damage and tears along the sweat band portion. The helmet is stamped internally with “EF64” which is the maker as well as the size, and with the heat stamp on the back. Only the numbers “429” can be made out on the heat stamp.
