8/26/24 – This is a traditionally made Japanese Family Sword signed by yamashiro Fujiwara Kane yoshiyuki from the 1700s. The sword is fitted with WW2 Japanese Navy fittings, meaning this sword was carried to war by a Naval Officer during WW2. This is characterized by the black ray skin handle with brown cloth wrapping, and the Navy style scabbard. Interestingly, the sword blade has a 23 inch cutting edge, which would typically not be allowed during the war as an Officer’s Sword, but exceptions were made for pilots, tank crew members, and naval landing forces. The shorter length is highly sought after by collectors today. The sword was originally made as a wakizashi and has never been cut down or shortened. The blade also features a beautifully distinct and jagged tempered edge. There’s some mild surface rub wear and speckling which is mostly near the tip of the blade. Overall the blade is in great condition. The tsuba is a civilian style which must have been customized by the officer. There’s natural patina and age but no major issues. Comes with an original Type 97 Navy style scabbard (2 mounting rings) with desirable field-leather wrapping. Overall length is about 33.50 inches.
