10/12/20 – This is a very rare and interesting Hi-Standard Model “B” that is marked with crossed cannons cartouche and ‘PROPERTY OF U.S.’ on the right side of the frame. In 1942, the War Department purchased many Model B’s for training purposes with all the new recruits. At the request of the military, the Model B was modified to become the Model B-US and barrels were cut to 4.5 inches to conserve steel, while the frame was modified to more closely resemble the 1911 Colt in the hand. This particular Model B appears to have come from the original, early 1942 shipment and has the uncut (5.25 inch) barrel. This is the first such example we’ve encountered, and is seemingly a pretty rare find. The gun itself is all original but clearly worn finish on most of the metal, and a few areas of pitting. Excellent bore. Original magazine. The grips are original but show some handling wear/age and a bit of dirt in the grooves.
