3/23/23 – This is a rare and super cool Gewehr 98 sniper rifle that was made during WWI at the Waffenfabrik Mauser A-G Oberndorf factory. It’s a terrific example of a WWI German Gewehr rifle that was converted into a sniper rifle. These WWI rifles all started out as standard service rifles and were modified/converted to sniper configuration by the addition of a set of double claw scope bases and scope. The primary difference of these WWI GEW snipers is the scope manufacturer and type of scope bases used; either the scope bases/claws were both mounted directly on top of the receiver or the rear base/set were off-set to the left side of the rear receiver, as in this case. The top of the receiver is covered by the front scope base, so we can’t identify the year of manufacture but can make out enough to identify the “Waffenfabrik Mauser A-G Oberndorf” marking. The rifle is all matching and original, serialized down to the mounts, adjustable sight, buttplate, etc. Receiver correctly in the white as this part was never blued. The stock has some dings and nicks but sharp Imperial proofs remain. Scarce Helios 5A scope with nice, clear optics. It’s also marked ‘Scharfstelling’ on the opposite side. We believe the only after market piece is the sling, which is certainly aged but we don’t believe is WWI original. Bore has strong rifling but some frost throughout.
