12/5/23 – This is a fantastic example of a rare and early Winchester Model 1887 lever-action shotgun from 1888, the 2nd year of production. The Model 1887 was the first lever-action repeating shotgun produced by Winchester. Only 64,855 of these were made from 1887-1901, and this is a particularly high condition example with deluxe case-hardened receiver. Most prior shotguns were single or double barrel break actions. The Model 1887 held six shots and could be fired rapidly. The Model 1887 built upon the solid reputation of Winchester’s lever action rifles and carbines that were already in widespread use throughout the country. Many Model 1887s replaced double barrel coach guns used by “shotgun messengers” employed by express companies and lawmen throughout the country. The left side of the receiver has the “WRACo” monogram. The lower tang is stamped with the four-line address/patent dates marking. The receiver has beautiful case-hardening that even extends to the internals of the action. Excellent bluing overall with some finish loss and freckling on the mag tube. The receiver also shows some minor pinpricking on the right side. The bore is somewhat shiny but there are a few patches of pitting. Excellent wood furniture with no notable defects. Cody letter states the serial was applied in 1888 but shipped in 1890.
