4/11/18 – This is a very early variation 1910 Mauser known as a “Sidelatch” model. Only about 15k of these were made. This one comes in 6.35mm and is a rarer variation as it was factory inscribed for the US retailer – Von Lenberke & Detmold in New York. This variation is covered in Penners book on Mausers – page 54. He calls them very rare and seldom encountered. He lists only 5 examples in his book. I would guess there were less than 1,000 made. This one is in the proper serial range. It also mentions a nickel plated magazine – which this one has. The gun has all matching numbers, and original finish. The finish has obvious wear issues. It has the black plastic grips which is also mentioned in the book. The gun has a minor mechanical issue with the safety lever and button. The gun fires properly, but the safety is not working. I assume it would be the safety spring. Also, the magazine is difficult to remove, but that is true on all of these early Mausers. The bore is frosted throughout with somewhat worn rifling. So the gun was used many times. Otherwise it seems to function properly.
