9/12/23 – This is a Type 22 Murata issued by the Imperial Army of Japan, manufactured between 1889-1898 and featuring a 28″ barrel. The Type 22 used by Japan prior to the Type 30 Arisaka’s adoption. Designed by Maj General Murata using inspirations from European rifles, this rifle employs the Kropatschek Tubular magazine and cutoff. It has all the proper markings and proofs, including a full mum. The stock is in its original condition and has a nice cartouche stamped on the side. It is almost entirely matching, including the receiver, barrel, bolt head, bolt body, striker assembly, trigger guard, bottom of the magazine cover, rear sight ladder, and the nose cap. The only exception is the rear sight slider, which is mismatched. The metal has retained about 75% of its finish, but does show its age with a fine patina throughout. Wood furniture is in great shape, with just minor dings and handling marks throughout. The bore has pronounced rifling, but is pitted throughout. The buttplate is missing a screw. Antique, so licensing required.
