10/21/20 – This artillery saber was crafted by Ames Manufacturing in Massachusetts. It was manufactured during the last year of the U.S. Civil War for members of the Union artillery units. It is U.S. military proofed and marked with ‘J.F’ inspection stamp on the hilt. ’48’ is stamped on the bottom of the scabbard which is believed to be the unit designation. The handle is wrapped leather with brocade and a brass hilt. This unique piece is a fantastic example of a Civil War artifact. Excellent overall condition.
