6/1/23 – This is a WW2 production handmade Type 98 Army Officer Sword. The sword tang has a star stamp, which denotes membership to the Rikungun Jumei Tosho, which is an army approved swordsmith guild that made handmade blades for the war effort during WW2. The army provided steel and charcoal to these smiths to make the blades. This example has late war fittings and a late war scabbard, both are in excellent condition as shown, although the metal fittings are missing from the base of the scabbard as shown. Known as a Type 3 sword. The blade has dark speckling oxidation scattered throughout the finish. Some of the discoloration is mild and light, but there are a few areas of darker, deeper surface wear. The blade also has some light surface scratches and scabbard rub wear on each side. The tempered edge is faint but still visible. No chips or nicks along the edge. Comes with a Junior Officer’s tassel as well.
