Poultney & Trimble
Smith's Carbine
1850s-60s
012121 - 2

1/22/21 – This is an absolutely gorgeous example of a Poultney & Trimble Smith’s Carbine from the Civil War era. The Smith Carbine was a 0.50 caliber breech-loading rifle patented by Gilbert Smith on June 23, 1857 and successfully completed the military trials of the late 1850s. It was used by various cavalry units during the American Civil War. The Smith Carbine was unique in that it broke apart in the middle for loading and it used rubber cartridges which sealed the gases in the breech. Poultney & Trimble out of Baltimore was the name of the distributor for the manufacturers of these rifles, and this one is not otherwise manufacturer marked. The bluing is fantastic on the barrel, most of the wear is on the trigger group. There is some oxidation in a few spots on the barrel but still in terrific condition overall. Beautiful case hardening on the receiver and hammer. Matching numbers throughout. Mint bore, hardly looks used. The buttplate and trigger group are both marked with a ‘W’. The barrel is L.F.R. inspector marked, as is the stock, and there’s also a ‘JH’ cartouche on the stock. The only knock on this rifle is it appears a previous owner hand scratched their initials in the stock, next to the military cartouches. Antique, so no license required.
