2/13/20 – From the family of the vet comes this incredible Colt 1911A1 grouping from a former Air Force pilot during World War II. This assembly comes via Paul Edward Tidwell, who was a Captain and C-47 pilot. He flew in the Battle of the Bulge with the primary role of dropping paratroopers, then later was responsible for flying fuel in and taking the wounded back out. More details of Tidwell’s service can be forwarded upon request, but he ended the war with over 750 hours of flight time. Included with this listing is many of Captain Tidwell’s wartime belongings. Among them, a manual device for computing altitude and airspeed, his pilot aviator glasses with Air Force marked case, military issued sewing kit and New Testament, various uniform patches and buttons, his navigation student workbooks, the ‘yearbook’ for his graduating class at the Air Force, original shoulder holster for the pistol, his handbook on instrument flying techniques and procedures, and several original photographs taken and annotated by Captain Tidwell. On top of that, the pistol is in near-mint condition. Made in late-1943, it has all proper markings and original finish/parts. A grouping of this nature only comes through our office but a few times per year, and rarely in such condition.
