7/25/23 – This is an Mauser Model 1871/84 infantry rifle, manufactured in 1887 at the Amberg Arenal, and was the first repeating rifle used by the imperial German military. Designed as a tubular magazine version of the Model 1871 rifle. The Model 1871 was the first rifle model designed and manufactured by Paul and Wilhelm Mauser, it has a 31.5″ barrel and uses 11x60mm black powder cartridges, which are inserted through the open bolt onto a carrier and into the eight round tube magazine. When the bolt is opened, the carrier rises, allowing the round on it to feed into the chamber. Alternatively, the magazine cutoff can be engaged to make this a single shot rifle. The metal on the receiver and barrel have some bluing left, but shows its age with an even patina throughout. Receiver is stamped with the serial, model name, and year of manufacture. The Barrel is stamped with the serial, “Amberg” arsenal, and proof stamps. The wood is in good condition, with no major damage or cracks, and there are German and Bavarian proof stamps throughout. The bore is bright with sharp rifling remaining, but there are spots of erosion about 3 inches down from the muzzle. There are two sets of serial numbers used which is common for these, since they were reworked at the Amberg Arsenal. Antique, so no licensing required.
