7/2/21 – This is a scarce Colt M1849 revolver that was inscribed with the name William Dolan professionally inscribed into the grip frame. There are over 50 William Dolan’s who served in the Civil War but there is only one officer, North or South, and that is William Dolan of the Confederate 11th Missouri infantry who was captured July 4, 1863 at Helena Arkansas and taken to Johnson’s Island prison camp. This revolver was made early in 1862 and has survived complete and matching with Colt casing and holster made from repurposed thin glove leather using lead finial popular on Confederate accoutrements. The revolver has original finish but is obviously worn throughout. Left grip panel appears to have a repaired crack. About half of cylinder scene still visible. Bore has strong rifling but heavily frosted. Cased is still included, as is a reproduction flask and some vintage caps. Antique so no license required.
