11/18/22 – This is a very nice example of a Danzig Gewehr 98 rifle issued to the Imperial German military in 1917. The gun is mostly matching, but the bolt is mismatched, and the follower was re-numbered to match. The stock is Imperial-proofed, but there is no visible numbering. The right side of the barrel is marked “S/42” and “P74”, indicating it was reworked and re-issued to the Nazi military during WW2. The gun has retained most of its finish, but there is light spotty wear on the barrel bands and bolt release lever. Some minor thinning and splotchy discoloration on the floor plate / trigger group. Brown patina and splotchy discoloration on the butt plate. The stock is in rough condition overall. There is obvious splotchy discoloration and staining from what looks like splatter black paint that someone tried to clean off. There is also a noticeable repaired crack in the wood around the action. Areas of obvious “buggering” of the wood on the bottom edge of the butt stock and around the wrist. Excellent bore with strong rifling.
