10/8/24 – This is a rare WW1 Austrian M16 ‘Berndorfer’ Combat helmet. This helmet is in overall very good condition given it’s age. This helmet includes its original additional front armor plate. During WW1 many new concepts for protecting soldiers were tested in the trenches. Including trench armor for both the upper body and in this case additional armor for the helmet. Both the Germans and the Austro-Hungarian Empires were known for such items, as the Germans had an equivalent to the Berndorfer Helmet called the Stirnpanzer. This Berndorfer Helmet still has it’s original liner inside, however the leather inside the helmet is fragile and has cracks and tears throughout. The helmet straps and the fabric straps for the armor plate are replacements and not original to the helmet.
