6/25/24 – This is an original WW1 Imperial German Kaiserliche Marine Tellermutze hat (Donald Duck style cap). These were worn by enlisted sailors and Junior NCO’s during WW1. This example is desirable due to the “S.M.S. Thueringen” exterior headband. This battleship was the 3rd vessel of the Helgoland class of dreadnaught battleships in the Imperial Navy. Famous for its involvement in the Battle of Jutland, and career in I Battle Squadron of the High Seas Fleet. Post WW1 the ship was ceded to France as war reparations, where it was used for target practice by the French Navy. The cap is in great overall condition with a clean exterior dark blue wool. Minimal surface scuffs and no major issues. The cockade is in great shape and securely attached. Headband is excellent. The interior leather headband has a faint oval shaped maker marking of some kind, but the marking is too faint to read or decipher. A few small rips in the leather but the headband is secure and in great shape. Natural surface wear on the interior liner. Mild stains but the cloth is excellent throughout. Faint silver maker stamp on the interior, as shown. Interior diameter is just under 7 inches.
