3/12/24 – This is a matching and original example of a very rare 1st Model Colt Dragoon revolver from ~1849. Matching numbers include the cylinder, strap, frame, trigger guard, barrel, wedge and loading lever. The First Model Dragoon is an important descendant of the famous Colt Walker revolver which debuted just one year earlier and was meant for use by the U.S. Mounted Riflemen and U.S. Dragoons and saw use on the western frontier in the antebellum era and on the battlefields of the Civil War in both Union and Confederate hands. This specific revolver was manufactured in 1849, falls within the First Model serial number range (1341 through about 8000). The finish on the revolver is original but obviously worn throughout with little to none of the original blue remaining. Nearly 100% of the early Dragoons were issued, so they are very difficult to find with any bluing left. The right grip panel has the original inspectors cartouche (though faint), marked ‘WAT’ for William A. Thornton. Left grip panel is unmarked, so may be replaced. The trigger guard has small ‘G’ inspector stamp, with ‘N’ stamps on receiver and cylinder, and ‘B’ on barrel and hammer. The cylinder has the Texas Ranger and Indian battle scene on it that is still generally visible, with correct oval stop slots. Brass grip strap/frame shows patina and discoloration. The bore has strong rifling but there is some pitting and rust inside.
