10/31/23 – This is an exceptional example of a Civil War Era US Government contract Model 1861 made by Colt. These rifles were produced from 1861 to 1865 and roughly 100,000 were made. The metal of the rifle is in great shape for its age and has a gorgeous layer of patina throughout. The stock is also in good condition with the only blemish being an impact mark on the right side in front of the lock plate. The bore is hard to see but it is fairly dark and the rifling is visible when shining some light through. The lockplate is stamped 1863 and “US Colt’s PT FA Mfg Co Hartford, CT” and the barrel has a stamp of an Eagle, 1863 for the year of manufacture, proof marks, and “NJ Steel.” The action is functional.
