8/14/23 – This is an antique Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver “Wells Fargo Model”, made in 1856 in Hartford, Connecticut. Though over 340,000 1849 Pocket Revolvers were produced by Colt’s factory at Hartford, only a mere 4,000 of them were produced in this configuration with a 3-inch barrel and no loading lever. These would have been even handier for the pocket than their longer-barreled brethren and have been colloquially called the “Wells Fargo Model”. The gun is matching, but part of the serial number on the butt of the frame is obscured, and the serial number on the cylinder has completely worn away. The stagecoach scene on the cylinder has also completely worn away and is no longer visible. The frame, cylinder, and barrel appear to have been touched up with cold blue, and the gun has a light brown appearance throughout. There are areas of pitting, most obvious on the left side of the frame, on the cylinder, and around the hammer. There is a tiny hole in the metal on the underside of the barrel (next to the serial number). Fitted with fairly worn wood grips. The bore has strong rifling, with a few small areas of light oxidation. Fully functional.
