6/9/23 – This is a rare Springfield Armory Model 1898 Carbine Rifle. This example is an old refinish with a replacement stock, however it is still one of only 5,000 carbines produced. The rear sight features the correct “C” marking and all of the metal parts appear to be original. The finish is an older refinish as evidenced by the areas of blued-over pitting on the receiver and barrel, yet there’s still some honest wear and light finish loss on this refinished bluing. There is visible pitting along the left side of the barrel and receiver. The rest of the metal shows light patina and mild finish loss. The stock is an excellent fit and is married nicely to the metal with minimal gaps. The wood has excellent graining you can still feel, and there are no cracks or chips in the wood. There are also no markings or stamps on the stock. The rifle is mechanically sound with smooth action, and the bore is in good condition with some signs of honest use wear. The rifling is strong, but there’s patina and mild wear throughout, which we rate at 7/10 overall.
