1/3/22 – This is an antique Springfield Percussion Muzzleloading Rifle, M1842 produced in 1853. The musket is in fair condition with almost all of the metal finish missing, except for trace amounts on the stock screws, trigger, trigger guard, and hammer. Most of the metal is steel colored and covered with a dark, natural aged patina. There’s some mild pitting and surface corrosion near the top of the breech as shown in photos. The breech is proof stamped with a “V” “P” and Eaglehead stamp. The lockplate is stamped “Springfield 1853” as shown. Mechanically sound overall with a faint remnant of some rifling visible in the bore. The bore is mostly smooth with some surface rust and patina, and dust throughout. The wood stock is in great shape with a very faint cartouche of some kind on the flat of the left side (shown in photos). The stock shows typical surface wear, aging, and bruising. No major cracks or chips however. Comes with a US stamped bayonet that’s worn and corroded in areas.
