12/5/22 – This is a very nice example of a rare Winchester Model 1873 musket manufactured in 1903. One of the most successful and certainly one of the most famous Winchester rifles was the Winchester Model 1873; known as “The Gun that Won the West” for its predominant role in the hands of Western settlers. Originally chambered for the .44-40 cartridge, its popularity led Colt to manufacture a version of the Single Action Army revolver chambered for the same round, called the “Frontier Model”. Winchester produced three variations of the Model 1873: the rifle, carbine, and musket, and only 5% of total production were muskets. This one is in much better condition than the average example. It has retained most of its original finish with nice case-hardening still visible on the hammer, trigger, and lever. Original beautiful fire bluing on the spring cover and bolt. There is minor wear around the muzzle, on the barrel bands, and on the high edges in general. While there isn’t much actual finish loss, there are some tiny handling marks along the barrel and some light scratches and areas of pin-pricking on both sides of the receiver. Some light spotty oxidation on the upper tang and on the lever. The wood stock is very nice with only minor dings, dents, and scratches throughout. The most pleasant surprise of this gun is the bore, which is mint. The gun also comes with a bayonet, scabbard, and leather frog. There are some tiny holes in the leather frog. The scabbard is marked “McKenney’s Pat. Jan12, 1886”.
