3/29/22 – This is a nice example of a Gewehr 88/05 “Commission Rifle”. It was originally made by Steyr in 1890 and was later converted by the Turks. It was originally chambered in 7.92mm Patrone 88 and was later re-chambered for 7.92x57mm S Patrone, as evidenced by the “S” on the receiver. The original bolt was replaced with a non-matching Turkish bolt. The gun comes with a cleaning rod. Generally, the gun is mismatched but has no import marks. The front barrel band does not fit perfectly on the gun. The metal parts have lost virtually all of their original finish with light brown patina and spotty oxidation throughout. The stock is nice with only minor dings here and there – looks like it was lightly sanded. There is a faint imperial proof on the right side of the butt stock. The rifling in the bore is decent, but there is spotty oxidation and tiny pits throughout.
