3/1/22 – This is a scarce Remington Armory Mosin-Nagant M1891 pattern rifle from 1917. During World War I, Russia could not keep up with the military demand for rifles, so they order over a million M1891 Mosin-Nagants from Remington Armory with matching bayonets. Remington had produced just under eight hundred and fifty thousand guns between 1915 and 1917 with only a little more than one hundred and thirty thousand having reached Russia by January of that year and of the seven hundred seventy thousand guns Westinghouse made, a quarter-million of those had made it to its destination by the time the Tsar’s government was overthrown the next month. A period of chaos broke out and by the time the Bolsheviks took charge, they defaulted on their contract to Remington and Westinghouse, claiming the guns were substandard, which was hardly the case. The U.S. Government then stepped in and bought the remaining inventory. This particular example is dated 1917 and has the proper Russian eagle proofs, including a seal on the right side of the butt stock. The gun is entirely matching (including the magazine and butt plate) except for the bolt. Comes with an original cleaning rod. There is not much actual finish loss, but there is brown patina and spotty oxidation throughout. The front end of the stock is marked “115”, which we assume to be some sort of rack number. The stock is nice, but there are small dings and scratches throughout. Mint bore.
